ODTUG & COUG Spring 2023 Meetup – Recap

The Chicago Oracle Users Group met in person on April 19th, 2023. We had three presentations, food, and some interesting discussions.

Location

Our meeting location was at my alma mater, Elmhurst University. We had a very large space in the Frick Center. Unfortunately, we had a freak thunderstorm that popped up out of nowhere right during rush hour. We think this prevented a large number of members from coming to this event. The turnout was lower than we had hoped for at around 15 people. We had a nice selection of food and drink to choose from. Mostly though, it was nice to be able to talk to folks in person again. Especially, given the few amount of in-person events for the last few years.

Agenda

Our agenda was as follows.

6:00 – 6:15: Registration
6:15 – 6:30: Welcome and COUG Status presented by Alfredo Abate, COUG President
6:30 – 7:00: Grabbing Live Wires: Plotting Our EV Future with APEX, GeoSpatial, and ML Analytics presented by Jim Czuprynski, Zero Defect Computing
7:00 – 7:15: Pizza break
7:15 – 7:45: The Modern Data Platform – Unlock the Value of ERP presented by Jeremy Simmons, Qubix
7:45 – 8:45: Oracle Database 23c Overview presented by Michelle Malcher, Oracle Corporation
8:45 – 9:00: Wrap-up and Raffle

Interesting note, about a week before, we learned that Michelle was unable to make the meeting. Jim and I ended up presenting in her place. We both spent some time learning the material including performing some LiveLabs on 23c. It was a fun session, and my first one co-presenting with someone. There are a lot of new features in the Oracle 23c Free – Developer Edition. We did have a little more focus on the JSON Relational Duality Views (JRDV). If you work with JSON documents often, you should see what this feature is capable of.

Kscope23

We described to our attendees the benefits of the upcoming Kscope23 conference in Aurora, Colorado.

We were fortunate to have two ODTUG board members with us; Tim German and Jim Czuprynski. They each had the opportunity to tell us about the virtues of this wonderful conference. I also said a few words about this conference after attending it in 2019 for the first time. Basically, IT’S A MUST!

Many thanks to our meeting sponsors ODTUG, Qubix, and Oracle. A special thanks to Jim Czuprynski for all his help in making this meeting a success!

Finally, if you haven’t already, make sure to sign up to receive our notification of our upcoming COUG meetings.
