COLLABORATE16 – First Time Presenting

I just returned from another great Oracle user group conference in Las Vegas, Collaborate 2016. The folks at OAUG, IOUG and Quest did a wonderful job again! This was my second time attending Collaborate with last year being my first. In fact, right after last years’s conference, I opened up my blog and wrote my first post called Collaborate15 – First Time Attending. This year I took a chance and submitted two abstracts to see if I would get accepted as a presenter. I was fortunate enough that one of these presentations was selected (Extending Oracle EBS 12.1.3 with Oracle…

Chicago Oracle Users Group – Two Year Retrospective

It’s been a little over two years since I first became President of the Chicago Oracle Users Group and I’ve been looking back at this whole journey.  It all started in January of 2014 when COUG members received an email from the previous President with a special message.  He was apologetic in his email as he had been busy with various startup companies and had let the focus of the group lapse.  This was completely understandable as he was running the COUG solo and anyone that’s ever been involved with a user group knows that this isn’t a paid position but…

Extending RAC Database Home Hangs

Recently I had to extend the RAC database home of an existing RAC cluster to two new servers using addnode.sh and it was hanging at 100%. The particular version of the Oracle database is 11.2.0.3 running on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.8.  I didn’t see anything in the log files but notice that the underlying java server process is consuming 100% of CPU when issuing top. I try restarting the addnode.sh step multiple times but I continue seeing the same behavior (even waiting more than 60 minutes with no progression). I start by increasing the Java heap size for the JRE used by the…

Chicago Oracle Users Group Meeting February 18th 2016 – Recap

We kicked off 2016 with a great meeting on February 18th. We had an excellent presentation by Tony Jedlinski and two presentations by Oracle Ace Director, Jim Czuprynski! Tony was our COUG “Show and Tell” and provided us with a great demo on how quickly you can go from a spreadsheet to a full blown Oracle Application Express (APEX) application in a matter of minutes. Now instead of a spreadsheet sitting on someone’s PC you have a browser accessible, secure and scalable application in an Oracle database. Jim’s first presentation was titled Analyze This! Leveraging Oracle 12c Analytical Functions. Jim went over…

Adding New SAN Disks to ASM for OCR Disk Group

Recently we had to migrate our ASM disks to a new SAN.  In this particular post we’ll take a look at the steps we went through for the diskgroup that is used by our Oracle RAC servers for the Oracle Cluster Registry (OCR) and the voting files.  The environment is Oracle database 11.2.0.3 on Oracle Linux 6.4.  This particular diskgroup (we’ll call it OCR) was originally created with 3 disks with normal redundancy.  We provisioned 3 new LUNS from our new SAN to replace the current OCR disks. Note: The original disks were named VOL1 – VOL3 while the new ones…

Chicago Oracle Users Group Meeting November 10th 2015 – Recap

We had another great user group meeting recently. We had two excellent presentations by well known speaker, Kellyn Pot’Vin-Gorman! The first presentation was titled AWR Warehouse and Beyond. Kellyn described what it is, how it can be used and why DBAs should seriously consider using an AWR warehouse. For those DBAs that are concerned with having to maintain more than days or weeks worth of AWR snapshots but perhaps would like to trend over months or years this is the solution for you. Take all of your individual database AWR snapshots and move them to a centralized AWR warehouse.  A…

OMS Configuration Failure – ORA-14440

On recent fresh installation of EM 12.1.0.5 during the OMS configuration we received a message saying that the OMS Configuration has failed. Viewing the log file to gather more details we found that we were receiving an ORA-14440: inserted partition key does not map to any partition. Searching My Oracle Support found a direct hit with document 1663277.1, EM 12c: Enterprise Manager Cloud Control OMS Installation Fails At OMS Configuration Stage With Message ‘ORA-14400: inserted partition key does not map to any partition’ Reported In CfmLogger*.log The fix was relatively simply and we followed the steps given in the document.   After we…

Using 12.1.0.2 DB Template for EM 12.1.0.5

Recently we performed a fresh installation of Oracle Enterprise Manager (EM) 12.1.0.5 using Oracle Database Enterprise Edition 12.1.0.2. as the management repository database.  We also installed Oracle Grid Infrastructure 12.1.0.2 so that we could take advantage of ASM for the database datafiles. Oracle provides a great pre-configured database template to help for this particular setup when using EM 12.1.0.5 and DB 12.1.0.2 that can save a little bit of installation time and eliminate having to manually configure various database parameters, tablespaces, etc.  The first thing to do is to determine if you fall into the small, medium or large deployment of…

Chicago Oracle Users Group Meeting September 17th 2015 – Recap

We had another great user group meeting recently! We had two excellent presentations by well known Oracle Ace Director, Tim Gorman! The first presentation was focused on Accelerating DevOps using Data Virtualization. This was a great presentation and really demonstrated that the next step in virtualization is at the data/storage level. Only with data virtualization can you accelerate the testing/deployment cycle to speed up project times, improve project quality and put a company at a competitive edge. All of this while using less storage than we ever thought was possible but with the ability to provide numerous copies of our production…

Chicago Oracle Users Group – RAC Attack! 12c Workshop

The Chicago Oracle Users Group organized a great RAC Attack! 12c workshop last Saturday, August 22nd. Even with the gorgeous summer weather we had an amazing turnout! Over 30 people showed up to learn how to install Oracle RAC on virtual machines on their own laptops. I had a great team of mentors that were helping our participants in the workshop. A special thanks to Ashok Sivasankaran, Ittichai Chammavanijakul and Omar Ahmad for helping folks get past issues they may have had. Additionally, Ashok gave us a great presentation overview on Oracle RAC and Omar did one on VM templates for…
